Ken Drobnak will give a guest artist recital on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico on Monday, April 3 at 7:00 PM in Buchanan Hall in the Music Building. Admission is free and open to the public.
The recital will feature Early Works for Tuba. Though the earliest known work for tuba dates to 1843, the earliest known composition composed for tuba in the United States was Solo Pomposo, written by Al Hayes. "Hayes" is a pseudonum for Henry Fillmore, an American composer and band conductor. An earlier piece (Fantasia en Do menor) was written by Bartolomé Pérez Casas (1873-1956). Two well known works for tuba are included, the Concerto for Bass Tuba by Ralph Vaughan Williams and the Sonate für Tuba and Klavier by Paul Hindemith. The recital will conclude with a work written for a French C Tuba, the Fantasie Concertante by Jacques Casteréde.
Drobnak will conduct a masterclass for students on Tuesday, April 4, 2023. Contact the ENMU Department of Music at 575.562.2377 for more information.
